About Stonecoast Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for Kids
Stonecoast Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Portland is a kids-only martial arts school — the first of its kind in Maine and, by its own account, the Northeast's first kids-only BJJ facility — taking students from age 4 to 16. Fundamental BJJ runs in three bands: a Littles programme for 4-6 year olds built around eight skills (focus, teamwork, control, balance, coordination, memory, discipline and fitness), a 7-10 class that starts the Stonecoast curriculum, and an 11-16 class. A separate no-gi wrestling and takedowns class for ages 7-16 combines wrestling with jiu-jitsu. Founder and head coach Shaun Durfee is a black belt who began training in 2004 under Jay Jack and Amanda Buckner and has over 16 years of coaching experience.
