About Metro Detroit Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - EAST
Metro Detroit Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu EAST is the Shelby Township academy of MDBJJ, a proud affiliate of the De La Riva BJJ Association. Owner and head instructor Scott Zapczynski is a certified 4th-degree black belt under Ricardo De La Riva who began training in 1996 and spent four months a year for over a decade training at De La Riva's academy in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro -- he is the only American to have received his blue, purple, brown and black belts from De La Riva there. The academy teaches gi and no-gi BJJ covering throws, takedowns, ground fighting and submissions for self-defence and competition, integrating beginners into classes alongside advanced students, plus a Kids BJJ / Bully Free programme built around confidence, awareness and response to verbal and physical bullying. Members-only open mats run four times a week.
