About T-Town MMA/Checkmat Tacoma
T-Town MMA / Checkmat Tacoma has been running since 2006 and calls itself Tacoma's longest-standing school for Brazilian jiu-jitsu, kickboxing and Muay Thai. It is a Checkmat affiliate founded by Professor Jimmy Thompson, a third-degree black belt under Checkmat co-founder Leandro Vieira who began training in 1997 and fought professional MMA from 1998 to 2006. The school runs beginner and advanced gi and no-gi jiu-jitsu — including 5 a.m. classes — a striking class blending kickboxing, Muay Thai and boxing, a kids' programme for ages 6-12 that competes across the Pacific Northwest, and a women's-only programme taught twice a week by several female instructors.
