BJJ Black Belt: How Long It Takes, What It Means and Every Degree

A BJJ black belt takes most people 8 to 12 years. The IBJJF minimums, what a black belt means, the IBJJF black belt certificate, every degree up to the coral belt, and how B.J. Penn did it in about three years.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Black Belt in BJJ?

Most people who reach black belt take 8 to 12 years from their first class. Under IBJJF rules, the fastest path for someone who starts as an adult is 4.5 years from blue belt to black, plus however long they spend at white belt, and almost nobody moves that fast.

IBJJF minimumTime
Time at blue belt2 years
Time at purple belt1.5 years
Time at brown belt1 year
Blue to black, total4.5 years
Minimum age for black19

There's no minimum time at white belt, but most people spend 1 to 2 years there. Two groups can move faster than the table. Adults who win the IBJJF World Championship at blue, purple or brown belt have no minimum time at that belt. People who held kids or juvenile belts before 18 get shorter minimums. A brown belt who wins the adult World Championship can even be promoted at 18. Our IBJJF graduation requirements guide lists every exception.

The minimums are a floor, not a schedule. Your professor decides when you're a black belt.

What a Black Belt in BJJ Means

A black belt has a complete game: they can work from every position, against every body type, in the gi and without it. They can teach any part of jiu-jitsu, and many run classes or their own academy. A BJJ black belt is not a guarantee of beating everyone in the room, but it does mean someone has put years into every corner of the art.

Many black belts say the real learning starts here. Without the next promotion to chase, training becomes about the details, and about other people's progress as much as your own.

Why it takes so long: in BJJ, every belt is tested by live sparring against resisting partners, so a belt only goes up when the game holds up under pressure. There are only five adult belts, and each one covers a lot of ground.

The IBJJF Black Belt Certificate

For the IBJJF to recognize a black belt, the promotion has to be signed by a black belt professor who holds at least two IBJJF-certified degrees. To get the IBJJF black belt certificate, the new black belt also needs:

  • an active IBJJF membership
  • a first aid or CPR certificate
  • a certificate from an IBJJF referee training program, rules seminar or rules webinar, dated within the past 12 months

These are IBJJF requirements. Academies and federations outside the IBJJF set their own.

BJJ Black Belt Degrees

After black belt, rank goes up in degrees, shown as white stripes on the black belt's red bar. Under IBJJF rules the times are fixed, and only years as an active black belt count, such as years with an IBJJF membership, a registered academy, approved student memberships, IBJJF titles, or its referee and rules courses.

DegreeYears at black
1st degree3
2nd degree6
3rd degree9
4th degree14
5th degree19
6th degree24
7th (red and black)31
8th (red and white)38
9th (red)48

The 7th and 8th degrees are the coral belts, with minimum ages of 49 and 56. The 9th degree red belt has a minimum age of 66. The 10th degree went only to the five pioneers of the art, the Gracie brothers Carlos, Oswaldo, Gastão, George and Helio; our Gracie family tree shows where they fit. For who holds them today, see our coral and red belts list.

Black Belt in Competition

Adult black belt matches last 10 minutes under IBJJF rules, the longest of any belt. Black belts may use everything brown belts can, including knee bars, toe holds and slicers, and in adult no-gi, heel hooks and knee reaping. The black belt divisions at the IBJJF World Championship crown the sport's world champions; see our Worlds 2026 results.

You don't have to compete to become a black belt. Competition is one way to test a game, not a requirement for the belt.

The Fastest Black Belts

B.J. Penn is the classic example. He started training BJJ under Ralph Gracie in 1997, earned his purple belt there, and then moved to Nova União. André Pederneiras gave him his black belt in 2000. A few weeks later Penn became the first non-Brazilian to win the black belt division of the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship in Rio de Janeiro.

That was about three years from his first class to black belt. Under today's IBJJF minimums, an adult beginner can't move that fast unless they win the World Championship at blue, purple and brown belt along the way.

Black Belt FAQ

How long does it take to get a black belt in BJJ?

Usually 8 to 12 years. The IBJJF minimum for an adult beginner is 4.5 years from blue belt to black, plus the time at white belt.

What is the minimum age for a BJJ black belt?

19 under IBJJF rules. Since the June 2026 revision, a brown belt who wins the adult World Championship can be promoted at 18.

Can you get a black belt in BJJ in 5 years?

Only very rarely. The IBJJF minimums add up to 4.5 years from blue belt to black, and almost nobody gets every promotion at the earliest possible moment.

What do the stripes on a black belt mean?

They're degrees. A black belt gets the 1st degree after 3 years, then one every 3 years up to the 3rd, and one every 5 years from the 4th to the 6th. Only active years as a black belt count.

Who can give a BJJ black belt?

A black belt professor. For the IBJJF to recognize it, that professor needs at least two IBJJF-certified degrees.

What comes after black belt in BJJ?

Six degrees on the black belt, then the red-and-black and red-and-white coral belts at the 7th and 8th degrees, and the red belt at the 9th. That's 48 years as an active black belt, at a minimum age of 66.

Do you have to compete to get a black belt?

No. The IBJJF sets no competition requirement for promotion. Some academies expect their students to compete, but most black belts are promoted for their game, their teaching and their years on the mat.
