About Iowa City Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Iowa City Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at 2001 Stevens Drive is, by its own account, Iowa City's original jiu-jitsu academy, serving the area since 2008 with over ten coaches. It is led by 3rd-degree black belt Jason Clarke, who started training with the Gracie family in 1994 — among the first Americans to learn jiu-jitsu — and has been coaching since 1998, bringing a background across jiu-jitsu, judo, MMA and Muay Thai. Programmes are age-banded into Lil' Samurais (5-8), Jr. Samurais (9-13) and adults from 14 up, with a stated emphasis on modern coaching methodology and constraint-led learning rather than technique memorisation.
