About Black Eagle Martial Arts

Black Eagle Martial Arts in West Des Moines, Iowa was founded in 2012 by Grandmaster Young Gul Son and is led by his son, Head Master Brandon Son. It teaches three traditional Korean disciplines — Taekwondo for all ages, and Hapkido and Kuhapdo (a Korean sword art related to Iaido) for adults — to students from age 5 to 70+, and is the headquarters of Heukchoowkan USA, the American branch of the Korean Heukchoowkan. Grandmaster Son holds a 9th-degree black belt in Hapkido, a 7th in Taekwondo and a 3rd in Kuhapdo, and created Sugi Hapkido, his own self-defense system combining judo and boxing, which he now teaches across the US, South America and Europe. Promotion tests are held every two months and students train in a dobok, with sparring gear available in the dojang.

Trial class

The school states plainly: "we do not offer trial classes" — prospective students are invited to visit and observe instead. Separately, the homepage advertises "Join now and get two weeks free!", i.e. two free weeks after registering rather than a trial before joining. The cost of a uniform is included with registration.
