About Kogen Dojo Self Defense Academy
Kogen Dojo Self Defense Academy runs two locations in Anne Arundel County, Maryland — Severna Park and Annapolis — teaching Gracie/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with an explicit self-defense rather than sport emphasis, Muay Thai kickboxing, a women's jiu-jitsu class, kids jiu-jitsu and kids Muay Thai, and a standalone self-defense programme. It was founded by Dwayne "Bowie" Bowie, a US Marines veteran and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Grandmaster Relson Gracie who heads the jiu-jitsu programme, together with brothers Robert and Matthew Van Valkenburgh — Robert, a Korean hapkido black belt under Grandmaster Joe Sheya, now teaches no-gi at both locations, and Matt, a US Army veteran and BJJ brown belt who has trained and fought in Korea and Thailand, runs the Muay Thai programme. The academy offers special classes and rates for police, firefighters, paramedics, EMTs and military veterans, and a free first class.
