About Quest Jiu-Jitsu and Self-Defense

Quest Jiu-Jitsu and Self-Defense in Chapel Hill opened in 1998 as the Chapel Hill Quest Center, the first To-Shin Do school in North Carolina, founded by Dr. Richard S. Stack in a purpose-built hall designed by architect Richard Gurlitz to echo Japanese dojo. Stack later passed the school to his student Hardee Merritt, who now owns it with his wife Rachel. It specialises in two distinct disciplines side by side — Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and To-Shin Do — with adult and kids classes in each, a Mighty Dragons intro-to-BJJ programme for ages 4-6, women's self-defence, QuestKickboxing and QuestFit fitness classes, personal and private training, and after-school enrichment and summer camps across the Triangle. Its jiu-jitsu is Roy Dean affiliated, with the lineage Hélio Gracie, Francisco Mansur, Joe Moreira, Roy Harris, Roy Dean, Hardee Merritt. All instructors are trained in safe-sport practices, CPR-certified and background-checked.
