KOA Jiu Jitsu Academy at 6008 Mt Tacoma Dr SW in Lakewood, WA is a community-founded Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school running four core programs — Beginner and Advanced Kids Jiu-Jitsu and Adult Fundamentals and Advanced Jiu-Jitsu — in both gi and no-gi, plus a women's class. Its name is drawn from the Japanese sense of a core where strength, unity and growth meet and the Hawaiian word for warrior. Head Professor Josh Calvo is a 3rd degree black belt with a professional MMA background who teaches fundamentals-first, supported by Professors Jesse and Carl (a black belt promoted by Calvo, with 45 years in martial arts) and coaches Julie, Matt (a founder of the academy) and Jasper.
