Category Five Jiu-Jitsu in Hurricane, WV was established by Shannon Newhouse in 2014 and inherited by Wes and Kristi Thompson during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. It teaches gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at all levels, a beginner jiu-jitsu class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, kids classes split 5-7 and 8-12, a teen kickboxing class for 12-15s and open mats, with all non-kids classes open to ages 13 and up. Owner and head instructor Wes Thompson is a black belt under Scott Layton with over 20 years in combat sports; the staff also includes Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu black belt Shannon Newhouse, Samuel Hedrick, Jacob Mills, Matthew Haid, and Ted Malone, a black belt under Saulo and Xande Ribeiro and a certified law enforcement and military defensive tactics instructor for West Virginia.
