About Richmond Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Self-Defense Academy
The Richmond Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Self-Defense Academy on West Broad Street opened in January 2002 and calls itself the longest-running BJJ and Muay Thai academy in Richmond, Virginia. It runs curriculum-based fundamentals and mixed-level classes in both arts, gi and no-gi jiu-jitsu, a Friday Muay Thai open mat and a Sunday ladies Muay Thai class, and states an explicit commitment to training that is accessible regardless of gender identity. Head instructor Trey Martin is a 4th-degree BJJ black belt certified under Julio "Foca" Fernandez, a 7th-degree coral belt under the late Carlson Gracie Sr., and the school is one of the original BJJ Revolution Team academies. It was founded by Eric Burdo and Liz Sussan, Richmond's first female black belt.
